FILLMORE, NAOMI EPPARD – 84, born on May 2, 1924 in Elkton, Virginia, died of pancreatic cancer on June 16, 2008. Naomi grew up in Elkton, Virginia and left to attend Berea College where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1945. She raised six children. At the age of 50, she returned to school at the University of Tennessee to complete graduate courses in education. She taught at Rule High School, Gresham Middle School and Sarah Moore Greene Grammar School.

Upon retirement, she joined both the Retired Citizens of the Smokies and the Happy Hikers of Knoxville. Naomi enjoyed hiking and took great pleasure in naming wildflowers along the trail (sometimes to the consternation of her children). She loved to walk with a purpose, correct her children’s grammar, play Scrabble, go to the movies, read the paper, go to church, and do crossword puzzles. She was a member of the New Covenant Fellowship and enjoyed participating in the church’s mission trips to Belize, Mexico, Russia, and the Ukraine, fulfilling an early dream to be a missionary. The daughter of Cordelia Fridley and Ralph Eppard, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Neil Fillmore and ex-husband, George Fillmore, Sr. She is survived by her sister and brother, Clara Brecht of Owatonna, Minnesota and Sam Eppard, and his wife, Sue of Elkton, Virginia; and a half-brother, James “Chip” Eppard, Jr. and his wife, Valerie of Fredericksburg, VA. She is survived by six children who love her and are grateful she is their mother – son, George Fillmore and his wife, Cathy, of Morristown, Tennessee; daughter, Dorothy Fillmore and her partner, Lisa Furr, of Richmond, Virginia; daughter, Teresa Fillmore of Kodak, Tennessee; son, Steve Fillmore and his wife, Janice, of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughter, Helen Fillmore of Richmond, Virginia; and daughter, Pam R. Fillmore of Franklin, Tennessee. Naomi loved being a grandmother and a great-grandmother, and she has six surviving grandchildren and six great-grandchildren – granddaughter, Jennie McFadyen and her husband, Bill of Morristown, Tennessee and their sons, Connor and Nate; granddaughter, Lorenda Davis and her daughter, Ashley and her sons, JJ and Christian; granddaughter, Sarah Greenway and her husband, Jason, of Maryville, Tennessee and their son, Jackson; grandson, Daniel Fillmore of Morristown, Tennessee; grandson, Matthew Fillmore of Knoxville, Tennessee; granddaughter, Elisabeth Fillmore of Morristown, Tennessee. She is also remembered by extended family and by nieces and nephews with whom she had a special relationship. The family wishes to thank all her friends who loved and supported her throughout her life, with special thanks to Helen Stewart, who helped Naomi raise the children and to Marilyn Anderson (Merle) and Carol Zoerb for being such good friends and caregivers. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19th at New Covenant Fellowship Church, located at 6828 Central Avenue Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee. A celebration of Naomi’s life will follow at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends who wish to make a memorial donation direct those to New Covenant Fellowship’s Mission Fund, 6828 Central Avenue Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37918.
