Opal Johnson
February 24, 1912 – January 16, 2008Opal McMullen Johnson, age 95, passed from this life into eternal life on January 16, 2008 at Sheridan on Rock Prairie in College Station, Texas.

Born in England, Ark., she was preceded in death by her parents, Anna Belle and James Henry McMullen; her brother, Coy McMullen and sister, Ruby Jewel Roe and her husband, Charles T. Johnson. Opal was a lifelong Baptist and a Democrat since Watergate. She made over 40 moves during the course of her marriage, making a home for her husband and daughter in each new town. Opal’s long-held desire to settle down in one place with friends and family close by has finally been granted. Opal taught Sunday School to children and her peers over the course of many years at First Baptist Church in England, Ark., and Belton, Texas. She reluctantly gave up teaching her last class at Calvary Baptist in Bryan, Texas, in her mid-eighties due to declining health. Opal fulfilled her highest calling of being a good mother, wife and daughter. She has a compassionate heart and quick sense of humor. She outlived medical predictions numerous times because her will to live was stronger than her physical problems and as she recently stated, “because she enjoyed life too much.” She loved her Lord and Savior with unwavering faith, her family, her feline and canine grandchildren and her personal physician, Dr. Wade Richardson. She was a surrogate mother in spirit to young people she came to know, showing them a loving and nonjudgmental concern.

She is survived by her only child, Olivia J. P. Simonich of Bryan, her niece, Jewel Marie Roe of England, Ark., and nieces and grandnieces, all of Arkansas. Interment will be in England, Ark., surrounded by loved ones who have gone before her. Memorial services are pending and will be announced when finalized.
